I'm not here to preach to you or tell you how to run your house. I am here because I care and through my experience have witnessed how far South things can go if these needs are not met. The basic needs I'm speaking of are healthy nutrition and healthy sleep. The two of these together will help create a happier and healthier family as a whole. Today I am going to focus on sleep and reasons why getting your kids to bed earlier will be the starting point for you creating a more positive parenting outcome. - [Worried Sleep Training Isn't for You?](https://tiaslightham.com/worried-sleep-training-isnt-for-you/) - hi parents and followers! happy new year and i hope you all had a fantastic holiday season! we are finally getting back into our usual rhythm of school and activities. where does the time go? i wish i could slow it down, but unfortunately i don't have the power. although, i do have the power to help you sleep train your little ones! i read an article this morning from the Globe and Mail newspaper titled "secrets of a cold-hearted 'sleep trainer.'" it was a very interesting article and one that left me wishing i could write the author back. wishing i could tell her it was possible and that everything would be okay. that you can sleep all night and so can your babies/kids. its not an impossible feat. it is something everyone can do with commitment and consistency. i'm not saying it's always easy and it is sometimes easier for some than others. some are left feeling pleasantly surprised and others struggle through it, but end with success. with my help, support, and assistance, together you can have success! i'm positive! - [Growing Independence](https://tiaslightham.com/growing-independence/) - Helping your child to grow and develop in the department of independence, is a constant work in progress. It doesn't happen overnight and it will definitely take some hard work, time and commitment. Noticing a theme here? All things in successful parenting require these 3 things! Hard work, time, and commitment. Well behaved, responsible, independent children are not miracles. Well, in some degree yes, our kids are all miracles, but their behaviour is a product of their parents dedication and commitment to them. Last weekend we were out for lunch downtown at a place we always go to, as it's the boys' favourite spot. The new manager came over to introduce herself to us and to tell us that Justin, one of the servers there we know, told her that 'those two little boys are the best behaved boys he has ever served in his entire life!' Compliments like this help you as the parent realize that your hard work is paying off. That you are raising well-behaved children who know how to act in public settings and more important they know the reasons why it's important to act a certain way. This happens through lots of time, training and communication with your kids, which you can all do, if you're not already! - [Consistency Is Your Key To Successful Parenting](https://tiaslightham.com/consistency-is-your-key-to-successful-parenting/) - Well, I have to say I am very excited to be posting from my newly launched website. I have worked hard to expand my business and services to meet more of your needs! I hope this post and my new site finds all of you well. Today I am going to chat about the big kahuna....CONSISTENCY!! This is the key to all things successful in parenting. It is your key to success from birth onward. With this word taken into action you will create an environment for you and your children that is manageable . You will help make parenting a joy and less of a struggle. You will be able to control your household in a well mannered, calm and more predictable way. - [Listen, Listen, Listen](https://tiaslightham.com/listen-listen-listen/) - One of the most important things we do as humans, but sometimes forget to do is LISTEN!!! It is an amazing gift and trait that will help you in so many situations throughout life. The true capability to listen, to truly listen, is something that we all take for granted. We can all listen but forget at times what it means to be a 'good' listener. To fully focus without distractions. To listen without your phone in your hand, your Ipad open or TV on. To give your complete self to the person you are listening to, will take you places you didn't realize were possible. - [Sibling Wars](https://tiaslightham.com/sibling-wars/) - Often we find ourselves wondering if our kids will ever stop arguing and just get along. Why can't they just play together peacefully? Why can't they be happy to have one another? Don't they know how lucky they are to have a brother or sister? I'm sure if you have more than one child, these are all questions you have asked yourself at one time or another. Teaching your kids to get along and learn to resolve their issues is an ongoing process, but if you are constantly on it you will find success. Like all things parenting it will take time and commitment. It will take you intercepting in the beginning to give examples and guidance and then once you have set up your boundaries and expectations you will be able to give your reminder and off they go. By creating this type of environment in your home you will find that you will be creating a more peaceful home and also helping your kids develop more independence. - [6 months of freedom....not likely!](https://tiaslightham.com/6-months-of-freedom-not-likely/) - are you bringing home a newborn and getting all geared up to continue your regular schedule. after all how hard can it be? all you have to do is lug the baby carrier or bucket car seat with you, right? the baby can sleep anywhere, right? you can still go out to dinners and stay out late because the baby can go with you, right? well, sorry to burst your bubble, but not really! yes, for the first few weeks you can do this. your freedom to some degree can continue. granted, you will need to meet every need of your new baby while you're out doing what used to be done in such a glamorous and speedy fashion. now you must stop to feed your baby, burp your baby, change your baby, and anything else that goes along with your new little package. - [Sleep Must Come First](https://tiaslightham.com/sleep-must-come-first/) - just like you, your child has needs. they need to eat, drink, sleep, be stimulated, cared for and loved. often times the basics of food and shelter take first precedence and parents feel they are doing what's important for their child. yes, of course you are but when sleep doesn't take the driver seat and - [Solid Sleep Cues Help Create Solid Sleep](https://tiaslightham.com/solid-sleep-cues-help-create-solid-sleep/) - often times i hear from parents and or/clients that their baby sleeps well some of the time, but other times he/she is waking often and not sleeping well. usually the root of this issue is that they are lacking solid, consistent sleep cues and sleep environments. babies do really well when there is a routine - [swaddle or sleep sack?](https://tiaslightham.com/swaddle-or-sleep-sack/) - hello my fellow readers, parents, and followers! so one final, SORRY!!!! - [good reads](https://tiaslightham.com/good-reads/) - just as we are constantly reinforcing the importance of literacy and reading with and to our little ones, it's just as important that we read and read some more ourselves! of course, we all need to take some time and just read to relax but, it's also good to freshen up on our parenting by reading some of the great resources that are out there for all of us! every once in awhile i find it very helpful to find a parenting book that discusses whatever issue(s) i feel our family is going through. for example: back talking, parent/child struggles, etc. every child and family has certain phases that come and go. it's how you deal with these issues and phases that help you get through them in a less painful way. the rate at which they disappear and get you back to your normal state is reliant on how you choose to deal with it. - [stuck in the middle of 1 or 2 naps](https://tiaslightham.com/stuck-in-the-middle-of-1-or-2-naps/) - it seems as though it's just all of a sudden, with no warnings, that your little one starts to battle one of their naps and the transition from 2 naps to 1 is staring you in the face. lets face it. it's the inevitable. your quiet mornings sipping coffee and reading the newspaper or catching up one emails are over in a blink of an eye. you know they still need to nap, but you also know they are developmentally and physically ready for a single afternoon nap. the idea of this transition sounds simple seems as though it would be a smooth and easy flow. that you would simply stop putting your little one down in the morning and just put them down after lunch for their long afternoon snooze. sadly, it doesn't always go like this. - [would you like to know when i post?](https://tiaslightham.com/would-you-like-to-know-when-i-post/) - if you would like to know each time i enter a new blog post than subscribe to mommy secrets! through my parenting and teaching i have discovered many organizational tips to help me get through my days with very minor frustrations, if not any, a lot of the time. i have to say that organization is the key. without this you are a complete wreck and so are your kids. - [mommy secret revealed: don't make habits you don't want to break!](https://tiaslightham.com/mommy-secret-revealed-dont-make-habits-you-dont-want-to-break/) - this seems an obvious statement, but lets face it, sometimes the obvious goes in one ear and out the other. i have learned through being a teacher and by parenting, that it is so much easier to let off a bit in terms of discipline, than it is to try and regain it. this is why i strongly encourage you to stick to your guns in all circumstances! whatever you do, don't give it!! once you do, all hell breaks loose! the reason i'm chatting about this today isn't because hudson is having any serious terrible two instances, well at least not this week, but rather because he is sick and something came to mind. i wanted to share with you the importance of having your kids sleep in their own beds!! starting with the age they are in cribs all the way up!! don't let them sleep in your bed or you in theirs after a nightmare, sickness, or whatever clever reason they come up with to conquer this challenge. just don't do it! not even once! once you give in one time, the battle begins. i will go into this topic on many occasions while writing to you in my blog because this is very important in all areas to make and maintain a calm and orderly home with your babies, toddlers, and kids. - [sleepless nights : sam 7 months](https://tiaslightham.com/sleepless-nights-sam-7-months/) - hi everyone! i am going to change the names of my clients to maintain their privacy, but their story will not be altered in any way. each situation is unique and has their own individual sleep problems. in this next case we have 7 month, sam who is not sleeping properly. his mother, sara, is very frustrated by his sleeping habits and ultimately wants him to sleep 2 solid naps each day and sleep at night from 7am-7pm without waking/feeds. - [troubles with bringing home baby #2](https://tiaslightham.com/troubles-with-bringing-home-baby-2/) - for those of you who have 2 kids or who are about to have 2 kids, i am sure you have witnessed or been wondering about what will happen when the baby comes home and invades the space of your first! this can be a stressful time as you are not only worried about your first, but now your second. you are completely exhausted and are entering a world of the unknown. all of these things combined can cause for a bit of a disaster zone. there are some things you can do to try and make this transition a little bit easier on your toddler and in turn will make life easier for you! - [catching your zzz's : 1 year sadie sleeps](https://tiaslightham.com/catching-your-zzzs-1-year-sadie-sleeps/) - hi everyone! it's been a busy week with out of town guests and my son, hudson, turning 3. that being said, sorry i haven't gotten back to you sooner with little sadie's sleep results! sadie who was struggling to go to bed for naps and nighttime has made amazing progress. she is no longer waking in the night. along with her all night sleep she is going to bed earlier. no more 11:00pm bedtimes! for laura and her schedule, she could manage to get her down consistently around 9:30pm and this is working for them. laura understands that this is still too late, but your child's schedule has to be something you can be consistent with. the consistency is key and is helping sadie create good sleep habits. she goes down without a fuss and sleeps all night. laura removed all stimulation from her crib and helped to make her room a more calming environment. 'setting the stage' can be half the battle. - [without you....there is no me!](https://tiaslightham.com/without-you-there-is-no-me/) - a personal thank you to all my clients and readers from the month of january! truly without you...there is no me!! i love helping everyone with their parenting questions and to get the sleep they deserve! the positives that sleep brings you and your baby is intangible! in combination with my guidance and support and your hard work and 100% dedication, we have successfully sleep trained many many babies this month alone! below i have listed a few quotes that came directly from some of my january clients!! once again thank you for allowing me to help you catch your zzz's!! - [update #2 for sam (7 months)](https://tiaslightham.com/update-2-for-sam-7-months/) - well, we are at yet another night with our little sam. he is doing so well and we are getting him there. it has been only 3 nights since we began this process and read below the email strand quoted from sara about sam's progress and my response: - [sleepless nights : jake (6 months)](https://tiaslightham.com/sleepless-nights-jake-6-months/) - the more people i help, the more apparent it becomes that many of the same issues cross over between clients. if you ever feel like you are the only one that has ever created a particular bad habit with your little ones' sleep issues...you can just stop thinking that immediately! you are not the only one who has let your child sleep in the swing, sleep with you, nurse all night, nap only on the go, rock to sleep....the list goes on and on and you can rest assured that the list who do these things goes on and on as well! good parents are only doing what they think is best for their baby and therefore, there is no blame and no one at fault! you are doing your best and that is all that anyone can ask. so stop beating yourself up and being so hard on yourself and start getting your sleep! i recently helped trish and her 6 month old son, jake, catch their zzz's and now her 'beat yourself up as a parent list', isn't quite so long! - [time change troubles?](https://tiaslightham.com/time-change-troubles/) - over the past couple days, i am getting a lot of complaints about how the time change is throwing everyone for a loop! stupid me, i should have posted about this a few nights ago! sorry about that! i guess the leprechaun got the best of me:)over time, no pun intended, i have perfected the way to get your kids adapted to a time change without the battles, struggles, and complete chaos that normally goes along with this! i often hear families complaining about how hard it was to get their kids on to a new time zone while traveling and/or the struggle to overcome the daylight savings hour that comes our way no matter what! - [it's the little things!](https://tiaslightham.com/its-the-little-things/) - being a parent is something no one could have ever fully prepared me for. it's just one of those things that you have to do to know. no matter how many times people say just wait until you have kids! better enjoy life now before the baby comes! your life will never be the same! you simply don't get it, until you do it! having kids is totally indescribable. each person experiences it in a different way and there is no way to tell anyone what it will be like. for me, i sort of thought i had a pretty good idea what i was getting into. i have my masters in education and taught kindergarten before kids. i also used to do tons of babysitting and was a part time nanny during university. needless to say, my life revolved around what i loved, kids! the funny thing is, even with all the experience i had with children...it's just not the same as when they are your own. having your own brings about this overwhelming sense of responsibility and with this comes this out of this world, massive type of love. i never could have imagined how much i would have loved my kids. the love is a love so big that you would jump in front of a moving train to save their lives. you would sacrifice anything to make them happy and to be sure they are comfortable, healthy and happy individuals. - [walking on eggshells](https://tiaslightham.com/walking-on-eggshells/) - do you feel as though you are walking on eggshells around you kids? afraid that at any given moment your child might loose his/her cool and have one of those crazy, out of body melt downs? feeling like you need to spend your days basically kowtowing to keep them happy? if you feel this way entirely or even just every so often than i think what you're about to read may be of some use for you and your family. when your children make you feel like you are walking on eggshells the main problem is that they are in charge. somewhere along the line the person in charge switched from you to them. once this happens all sense of control is out the door. - [is it seriously june again?](https://tiaslightham.com/is-it-seriously-june-again/) - every year i ask myself this question and every year for some reason the answer is always, yes! how is it possible that an entire year has passed. that our kids are finished another school year and we are , yes, another year older. how does this happen and so quickly? june is that bitter sweet time of year. that time of year where there is tons of hustle and bustle to finish up the school year, say goodbye to friends and teachers for the summer and again, yes, gear up to have your kids home all summer!! being a former teacher and now a parent i can say with certainty that summer break is a teachers' dream and a parents' nightmare. well, maybe not a nightmare entirely, but i love that analogy! it's that time of year where you don't know how you will survive the summer with kids home everyday. but, like every year, the summer will fly by and before long, if you're anything like me, you will be slightly saddened that they are heading back to school. it's a cycle that just goes on and on each and every year! - [kids sharing a room doesn't have to mean no sleep!](https://tiaslightham.com/kids-sharing-a-room-doesnt-have-to-mean-no-sleep/) - my deepest apologies to all my readers for not writing this summer! no excuses, but i did have a bit of a crazy summer with a flooded basement, broken washing machine, my vacuum bit the dust, hudson almost lost a finger at camp (literally), and the list goes on! But…like i mentioned, no excuses! this summer we spent some time at the cottage and I got my idea for this post due to the fact that we decided to finally try and get hudson (4 years) and beckett (2 years) to share a room. Selfishly we attempted this challenge, so we wouldn't have to suffer 3 weeks on the living room pull out couch! - [agree to disagree](https://tiaslightham.com/agree-to-disagree/) - opinions, opinions, opinions! we are all surrounded by them each and every day! we also give our opinions each and every day, so we are just as much to blame as those around us! the funny thing is some have a hard time understanding that someone else's opinion shouldn't be taken personally and you don't - [is the leprechaun leaving tracks in your house?](https://tiaslightham.com/is-the-leprechaun-leaving-tracks-in-your-house/) - for some st. patty's day fun have the leprechaun visit your house and get your kids involved, excited, and learning about the irish! this is fun for the whole family and the look on your kids' faces will make it all worthwhile!! please read my guest article for Club Mom and catch that little - [laser maze....say what?](https://tiaslightham.com/laser-maze-say-what/) - i know you're thinking..what the heck is a laser maze? i'm not sure about all you parents out there, but i am always trying to come up with something fun to do with my little ones. either with both my kiddos or something fun for hudson to do while beckett naps in the afternoon, or just because it's an at home day and we are desperate for something fun to do! one of my new year's resolutions is to be more creative with the activities i do with my kids. sure legos, building blocks, baking, arts, etc. are always great, but i want to try and do some activities that are out of the norm! something to spice up life! - [back to the basics](https://tiaslightham.com/back-to-the-basics/) - sometimes i find that when it comes to sleep training your little one you need to just go back to the basics! there are some very important steps you must follow when helping to teach your little one to sleep properly. i am a firm believer in choosing a sleep training method that you feel confident in and one you feel you can stick to! if you are thinking of sleep training, have already sleep trained but need to get your little back on track due to sleep digressions, or feel you need to make some changes to your already established sleep regime than this article is for you! there are a few points that i feel are a MUST if you are in any of the above situations. without these pointers it is very difficult to create a concrete sleeper! - [reflections of a parent](https://tiaslightham.com/reflections-of-a-parent/) - goodbye 2012 and hello 2013! a new year to start fresh, continue with the good and try and fix the bad! it's time to reflect on the past year and think about ways in which we want to try and better ourselves and how we live our lives. sometimes reflection isn't always the easiest thing to do as we often have to re-live times, experiences, or actions that we may not enjoy or be all that proud of. that being said once the reflection is complete and you've had time to really think about those times, you are often bettered for it! you can then move forward trying to create better actions in the new year to come. - [are you boarding the sleep train?? Guest post for Club Mom](https://tiaslightham.com/are-you-boarding-the-sleep-train-guest-post-for-club-mom/) - please click the link at the bottom and read about the benefits of sleep training your little ones! the benefits for your child, you, and your entire family! i'm sending you to the post via this the link as i did a guest post for Club Mom : www.clubmom.ca it's a great site for moms - [Hard work up front pays off in the long run](https://tiaslightham.com/hard-work-up-front-pays-off-in-the-long-run/) - just like most things in life, hard work pays off. becoming a new parent is a bit scary as it's one of those things that you have to just sort of fly by the seat of your pants. there is no manual on how to parent, but i can say that if you simply love your kids as much as possible than you will always do your best. you will take the time and effort to always try. you will read articles, ask friends, learn through trial and error, learn from your mistakes and mainly you will give it everything you've got! afterall, what have you got to lose? we've only got one life and one opportunity to raise our kids! yes, you can simply just raise kids, but do you want to do that? or do you want to raise them to be the absolute best human being they can possibly be? i hope your answer is yes to this! your kids are counting on YOU!!! don't do them a disservice and half-ass the job. make it your #1 priority to parent exceptionally! this is your time to commit to them and before you know it they will be all grown up and the proof will be in the pudding! - [can't they just stay little forever?](https://tiaslightham.com/cant-they-just-stay-little-forever/) - how badly i wish the answer to this very question was, yes. i find myself thinking where did the time go? it's a mere blink of an eye and my sweet hudson will be 4 in january and my baby becks is already 16 months. don't get me wrong i love watching them grow and learn. seeing them develop into such sweet, bright, well mannered little boys is any parents dream. but, lets face it...our babies growing up is the ultimate bitter sweet! - [baby talk...NOT even for babies!!!](https://tiaslightham.com/baby-talk-not-even-for-babies/) - who is baby talk for? in my opinion the answer is no one!! i'm not saying to avoid a sweet sing-song voice with your infants/babies, but i am saying that no one needs to listen to baby talk! baby talk for me is a sort of nails on the chalkboard sound. it irritates me, but more importantly it frustrates me. it frustrates me because i feel sorry for the baby or child. babies and children learn from you. for the first few years of their lives all education comes from you...the parents!! it is your job to teach them about everything and language in particular. they learn from example, exposure, and repetition. you are responsible for giving them all of these three things! - [cry it out (CIO)...not exactly!!](https://tiaslightham.com/cry-it-out-cio-not-exactly/) - it seems like many mommies have emailed recently with a similar comment. they have babies who sometimes sleep, but not always. sleep through the night, but not always. nap, but not always. they all say to me "i've tried the CRY IT OUT (CIO) method, but nothing seems to work!" this always hits home with me and a very large red flag goes up. the comments regarding being a good sleeper some of the time and the fact they have given CIO a shot shows me a great deal of inconsistency regarding teaching their little ones to sleep. i am not bagging any of you moms who have this same situation or one similar. i am only here to help and since this seems to be a very common issue lately, i thought i would address a few things that will hopefully help or get you headed on the right path. - [good old fashioned family time](https://tiaslightham.com/good-old-fashioned-family-time/) - there really is nothing better than good old fashioned family time. the problem is, it seems harder to come by in this day and age. with all the newest and latest technology, television, schedules, over-programmed kids, working parents and much more it seems almost impossible to get back to the roots and just spend time together. time chatting with your kids. time playing with your kids. time snuggling and reading with your kids. time playing board games and eating meals together. all of these things seem like ordinary activities, but oddly enough they don't happen in many households or if they do happen it's not often. rather we (meaning society in general) rush by one another in the mornings trying to get organized for the day. we race from activity to activity from drop offs to pick ups. we feed one kid and then other later. we try to just get through the day using our survival skills and ready for the next. during these crazy days we often forget the importance of "good old fashioned family time!" - [boredom equals bad behaviour](https://tiaslightham.com/boredom-equals-bad-behaviour/) - summer is vacation is either here for your kids or quickly approaching! now the question for parents is...what am i going to do with them all summer long? i find myself asking this same question, but also being excited to have my little man home from nursery school to spend some good quality time together. hudson is so much fun to have around. like his teacher said in his report card, "morning chats are like tea time with a best friend!" she is exactly right in her description and i couldn't agree more. therefore, i want to keep hudson busy enough this summer, while still allowing relaxation and time to just hang! we all need a break from the routine and business. time just to do sporadic activities, play with friends, and hang with the family. - [flexibility....a must!](https://tiaslightham.com/flexibility-a-must/) - flexibility isn't really a choice when it comes to parenting. it's more like a must! without the ability to be flexible, parenting can become a much more difficult job than it has to be. your capability to be flexible in certain circumstances will make everyone in your family feel daily success, rather than pure defeat. as a parent you want your day to go as smoothly as possible. this is why we have schedules and routines in place. with these schedules your days run like a smooth oiled machine. without, it's a crazy form of chaos. the schedules allow you to be organized, which is a pertinent key to having happy kids. schedules are your general guide, but it doesn't mean you can't stray from it from time to time. by having strict routines and schedules in place it will allow you to go off of them occasionally without insane melt downs from your little ones. you have to be flexible because life happens. you also have to be flexible because every time you have a schedule in place it seems your child than has a schedule change. goes from one nap to two. needs a later bedtime. wakes earlier and therefore naps earlier. there are many scenarios beyond these that come about, forcing you to be flexible. - [explanations needed!!](https://tiaslightham.com/explanations-needed/) - lets face the facts...when someone tells you 'no,' you want to know why? when someone says 'stop doing something,' you want to know why? when someone is upset with you, you want to know why? we all look for some type of explanation when something occurs whether good or bad. we like to know the facts and so do your kids. babies and children are humans. yes they are little, but they are still humans. just like you and i. they are capable of understanding your explanations and we owe it to them to try and explain each situation and scenario that occurs to them. - [my baby turned 1!!](https://tiaslightham.com/my-baby-turned-1/) - all i can say is where has the time gone? it only seems like yesterday that we were bringing baby beckett home from the hospital and now an entire year has passed. it's bitter sweet to have my baby turning 1. i selfishly want my baby to stay little forever, but at the same time - [freedom or happy kids?](https://tiaslightham.com/freedom-or-happy-kids/) - freedom or happy kids.... i have to admit this is a complete toss up! although, the decision for me is an easy one. i definitely go with happy kids. sure, i would love to just go where i need to go and do what i want to do when the time was convenient for me. - [responsible kids or just plain brats for life?](https://tiaslightham.com/responsible-kids-or-just-plain-brats-for-life/) - hi everyone! so very sorry i have been out of touch for so long. between travel and my mom here to visit life hasn't been so called-normal for the last couple weeks. my apologies! i know my title may sound a bit harsh, but i recently read an article from Parents Magazine. the article was - [stand tall in your shoes!!](https://tiaslightham.com/stand-tall-in-your-shoes/) - right for you....wrong for them! parenting is something that brings about debate after debate after debate. some minor and some so controversial that the discussions become seriously heated! with this comes parents second guessing themselves, wondering if they are doing this right or wrong and maybe feeling a sense of failure with certain issues. i'm here to tell you to not let it get to you. if you let the pressures of others get under your skin you will be unhappy parenting. you have to remember that they are your kids and the choices and decisions you make towards parenting are entirely up to YOU! don't let others push you around. make you feel inferior or wrong. i often find what other parents have to say very interesting and i learn lots from others. what i don't listen to is negative comments or judgements made towards me and/or my parenting style. - [happy mother's day!!](https://tiaslightham.com/happy-mothers-day/) - a very happy happy mommy's day to all you wonderful mommies! to all of you, whom like myself, dedicate our world, lives and entire heart to our beautiful children. you deserve a day to be recognized for all your hard work and i truly hope that you were by the ones you love! - [is the dog getting more food than your baby?](https://tiaslightham.com/is-the-dog-getting-more-food-than-your-baby/) - it's funny how you can forget so much from one child to the next! it also boggles my mind how two kids from the same recipe can have such different personalities! these differences are what make each of our kids unique and why we love them all so much! that being said beckett (10 1/2 months) is at that stage where he knows he shouldn't do something, but likes to look at you directly in the eye, smirk and follow through with whatever he knows he shouldn't be doing! when he looks at me with those big, knowing, blue eyes it is hard not to let out a little chuckle or smile, but i try my best to hold strong! hudson, my first, was one of those boys, and still is, whom always seemed overly compliant. i would say 'no' 1 or 2 times and he would move onto something else, never to return there again. it breaks my heart how sweet he truly is! beckett on the other hand, still sweet of course, is a bit more aggressive if that's the right word:) he knows what he wants and is doing his absolute best to get it. i can't fault the guy for his determination but, on the other hand, all of his hard work is making my work a bit more challenging, to say the least. my 'no' 1 or 2 times to address something with hudson isn't coming even remotely close to the tip of the ice berg with becks. - [is pooping seriously a choice?](https://tiaslightham.com/is-pooping-seriously-a-choice/) - according to my 3 year old, pooping is actually a choice!! argh!! this might be the most frustrating thing for the both of us. he is fine to go anywhere as long as mommy, daddy, nana, or connie are around to take him to the potty. for some reason the school potty is a 'no way in hell' sort of place to go. no good reasons for this stance, but this stance is strong to say the least! hudson goes to school each morning and stays 2 days for the full day for french immersion. mon/wed/fri he has no poop issues as he is home 1/2 day to do his business. our problem arises on his long days! every tuesday we begin our struggle of being totally backed up! he remains this way from tuesday-thursday in fear of getting out what is, truly a full-grown man sized poo! yucko and ouchy all at once! he is completely terrified to go as he knows it will hurt. i, of course, have to play the roll of coaching! i feel as though i am coaching him through child birth and the screams and actions from him resemble this act as well :( together we HATE this whole thing!! - [i swear by it!!](https://tiaslightham.com/i-swear-by-it/) - as mom's, we all have our things we swear by. whether it be tricks of the trade, methods of parenting, and of course the products we choose to use! we all have our preferences of which diaper brand, disposable or cloth, homemade baby food or jarred, lotion before bed or not, etc. this list will go on for eternity, but one product that is definitely worth mentioning as a mommy tip: bio gaia!!! i swear by this stuff up and down. it is a little bit like liquid gold! it's not cheap to say the least, but the amazing work it does on your little ones' immune system is worth every penny! we go through one of these tiny little bottles, that costs in and around $33.00 each week. we used to spread it through 2 weeks before the arrival of baby beckett, but now the 2 boys smack back 1 per week. i can't imagine the bio gaia budget per year if we end up with a 3rd baby, yikes!! - [splashing fish or 'wailing' whale?](https://tiaslightham.com/splashing-fish-or-wailing-whale/) - newborns and baths...some parents find this time of the day to be a relaxing one, as their infants lay back and relax. others find this time extremely stressful as their tiny new baby, flails around wet, shivering and flat out pissed! as a first time parent everything can be somewhat awkward as you are trying to get the hang of so many new things. simply trying to organize when to bathe the baby can be trying enough, let alone the actual handling of the slippery baby both in the bath and getting them out. with lots of practice and a very useful tip from a nurse when i delivered my first i have been able to get the wailing whale to stop and relax! once i got the hang of everything, had a schedule/routine in place, bath time was something i, and my baby, looked forward to each evening. it took me a little bit of time to master the art of newborn bathing with my first. poor hudson was the guinea pig and had to struggle through my learning and therefore, little becks definitely got the good of the stick with this one! as you can see from the photo just 1 1/2 weeks old and loving every minute of his bath. so much that he actually fell asleep! priceless! - [co-sleeping a safe choice?](https://tiaslightham.com/co-sleeping-a-safe-choice/) - co-sleeping is one of those issues that happens to be one of the most controversial and talked about topics in parenting. it seems as though you either fully agree or fully disagree. there isn't any amount of gray. my opinion towards co-sleeping is on the side of disagree. it's not because i don't love to snuggle with my babies, or as hudson would say "nuggle," but rather it's because i find it very dangerous. it's one of those things where you think nothing will ever happen to your baby in your bed, but the reality is it happens to someone. sadly, not just a single someone, but multiple families lose their little ones due to co-sleeping every day. your bed isn't a safe place for your tiny one to be with you. especially because in most cases you are co-sleeping due to complete exhaustion. you're not as alert as you should be and when your body experiencing this type of exhaustion your not aware of what you may or may not do in your sleep. i see the perks of co-sleeping. as it makes it easier to feed and attend to your baby when they are right there with you and you don't have to get up out of bed and make the trek down the hall or over to the bassinet. i fully understand the reasoning behind this, but not enough to outweigh the risks involved. i also understand that parents want to bond with their babies and give them skin to skin, and time to be physically close to one another. this again, i agree with and feel is very important. i believe making time for this during the daytime hours is the safe way to get this type of bonding. many co-sleep because they want to be there the second their baby 'needs' them. this is an entirely another topic of discussion and one we can get into later, as it's definitely one of my reasons for disagreeing with co-sleep as a sleep solution. in a nutshell i truly don't agree with co-sleeping for the safety of my babies and everyone else's. i know we are all trying to do our best and we all have our own beliefs on the many issues involved with parenting. often we have to learn to agree to disagree, but in terms of co-sleep i stand firm in my belief that it just isn't safe!! - [did the stork drop you a 'good' baby??](https://tiaslightham.com/did-the-stork-drop-you-a-good-baby/) - if you are answering no to this question than you are absolutely correct! i'm not talking about your newborn. i'm talking about once your infant gets a bit older and is over any colic phase, if you were one of the unfortunate few who were given this challenge! the interesting thing is, the answer should be 'no' for everyone! it's 'no' if you have a baby who doesn't sleep, cries all the time, along with many other issues. it's 'no' if you have toddlers or kids who don't listen, behave or whom are constantly throwing tantrums spiralling out of control, and of course many other issues that go along with these. the interesting thing is for those who answered 'no' but don't have any of the above issues. the reason these people are answering 'no' is because they didn't just get the luck of the draw and were miraculously granted a so-called "good" baby! this is not the case. the stork didn't just drop them a good one! they put in lots of hard work, time and commitment to their children to help mold them into the human being they are! therefore you can see where i am going with this post. your baby, toddler, kids are good because you parented them to be just so. on the other hand, if they are not so good, than somewhere along the way you may have missed something. this is not a slap in the face to anyone. rather it's a wake-up call that it doesn't have to be this way! - [back to reality!](https://tiaslightham.com/back-to-reality/) - well, i'm back from my sister's long weekend away to california! the kids survived, my husband barely (lol!), and i'm refreshed and ready for anything! good thing, since both boys decided to come down with a nasty cough, nose, and fever gig! needless to say trying to adjust to the 3 hour time change, while listening to the orchestra of coughs throughout the night and dealing with 5 am fevers, i can officially say i'm back to where i was before i went! only kidding! it's not that bad and i am so happy that i had the chance to get away from my groundhogs day routine and have a little adult time; white wine lunches, shopping and wondering the streets with a latte and no 'snack traps' or 'sippy cups in hand!' - [yawning, fussing and rubbing eyes?](https://tiaslightham.com/yawning-fussing-and-rubbing-eyes/) - do you witness one or all of these things in your child? does it happen once in a day? all day? if you answered yes to ANY of these questions, than your child is over-tired! once you have an over-tired child and the ideal window for sleep has been missed, than i can probably say you have your work cut out for you! by paying close attention to your baby's behaviour and schedule (feeds, sleep, stimulation time) you will more easily distinguish his/her tired signs. by figuring these signals out you will have half the battle in the bag! - [sleep deprivation killing you?](https://tiaslightham.com/sleep-deprivation-killing-you/) - sleep deprivation...other wise know as the living hell! there really is nothing worse! losing sleep day in and day out, night after night, is enough to make you feel like you want to crack or maybe kill!! i remember the feeling with both my boys when they were newborns and the memory doesn't fade. i recently came across this article, "the case for sleep medecine," from the new york times newspaper. it had some very interesting things to say about the sleep deprivation. we all know that it makes us feel like crap, but this article points out some of the negatives it has on our health. - [are you boarding the sleep train??](https://tiaslightham.com/are-you-boarding-the-sleep-train/) - to sleep train or not to sleep train...that is the question? many parents have a difficult time deciding whether or not to sleep train their little one. they ponder this question for days, weeks, months and in some cases years! they go back and forth between what method they want to try, the pros and cons of sleep training and whether or not they feel as though they can handle the battle. they often wonder whether or not they are capable of defeating this dreaded no sleep cycle. i am here to tell you that YOU are totally capable! with the right tools, knowledge and method, YOU will successfully sleep train you baby!! - [make time for you know who....YOU!!!](https://tiaslightham.com/make-time-for-you-know-who-you/) - this is often easier said than done! trust me i know this first hand! i have a husband who is always at work, family who doesn't live here or who are not in the city very often, and therefore, it is I who pretty much does the majority of the grunt work with the kids!! don't get me wrong, i truly love my mommy job and i feel so fortunate that i get to spend my days with my sweet boys, but sometimes i feel i need just a little time for me. i don't mean a short afternoon out of the house or a quick pedicure, but rather some real adult mommy time. in theory, somewhere a plane can take me, with sun, reading, relaxing and of course some shopping! the reality is i am booked to do just this in the very near future....yikes and yay all at once!! i haven't been away at night from the boys for 2 years and because i am the one who normally does everything i am finding it a bit nerve wracking and hard to simply...let go! two words that i could practice a little bit more:) - [sleepless nights : jack (5 1/2 months)](https://tiaslightham.com/sleepless-nights-jack-5-12-months/) - do you wonder if...you are ever going to get your little one to sleep all night? if he/she is ever going to take a nap longer than 45 minutes and not always need to be rocked to sleep? are you ever going to stop feeding in the night? am i ever going to get this kid on a schedule? these are some of the major concerns carolyn wanted help with when she contacted "mommy secrets." i sent carolyn my beginning questionnaire, which really helps me get a good idea of her current situation. we had a great phone consultation and i was 100% confident that she, like many others, would find success at the end of this process. carolyn was feeling a bit overwhelmed by the lack of schedule and that she never really knew when to put jack down for naps or bedtime. he was currently taking 3 naps on average, all very short, and going to bed between 8:30-9:00 pm. he was being rocked to sleep and during the night when he woke, anywhere from 1-3 times, carolyn was feeding him and he would then go back to sleep. sometimes in the early morning feed she would bring jack back to bed with her to nurse and co-sleep, just to catch a few more zzz's. does this sound familiar to any of you mommies? - [catching your zzz's : jack (5 1/2 months) sleeps](https://tiaslightham.com/catching-your-zzzs-jack-5-12-months-sleeps/) - hi everyone!! so sorry it has been so long since my last post! we were away on a family vacation...a really good excuse in my opinion! :) that being said i am so happy to be back home and back blogging with you! during my time away i continued to work and sleep train many little ones! i wanted to give you the update for our little jack. sorry again for the delay in jack's progress report! jack took to sleep training very well, as all babies do if you stick to the plan! carolyn and her husband were very consistent and committed to the process and they saw amazing results in the first few days. after the first week they had jack sleeping all night on his own. he had learned to self-soothe and when he did wake in the night he would fuss himself back to sleep. they no longer had to go to him to soothe and feed. as the days went on, the wakings decreased and the little boy who was going to bed around 9 pm, was hitting the sheets around 7 or 7:30 pm and sleeping until 7:30 am! there are no more night feedings, rocking or co-sleeping in jack's house! - [reel the fish back in!](https://tiaslightham.com/reel-the-fish-back-in/) - argh, argh, argh! sometimes parenting gives you a run for your money! when i say parenting, i mean that you actually have to parent. there is a big difference between being a parent and actual parenting. when you are just going through the motions day in and day out you are a parent. those who put in the actual time, effort, and attention your kids need are doing true parenting! this is the best way to raise happy, respectful, well-behaved kids! - [teeny tiny green footprints!](https://tiaslightham.com/teeny-tiny-green-footprints/) - it's that time of year! that time of year where we all read books with our little ones and chat about the reason we wear green on saint patricks day! to avoid being pinched is reason enough to join in on the fun, but i find real joy in making any holiday a grand occasion - [knowledge is power](https://tiaslightham.com/knowledge-is-power/) - i am constantly helping mothers who feel completely exhausted, overwhelmed, and hopeless when it comes to ever getting their babies to sleep. i love doing this for many reasons. i of the reasons is because it is so rewarding to help others have success! nothing feels better than hearing the sad, tired voice of an exasperated mother turn happy, rested and upbeat! along with this their babies are happier, more rested, and in turn, learning more throughout the day, helping them enjoy life to it's fullest and become all they can be! - [sleepless nights : melanie (1 year)](https://tiaslightham.com/sleepless-nights-melanie-1-year/) - i have just recently finished helping a couple sleep train their young daughter melanie. melanie is 13 months and is not an a schedule, doesn't fall asleep unless she is rocked, naps a short period of around 45 minutes only on occasional days or if she is in the car, goes to bed around 9 pm and wakes throughout the night screaming. the only way for them to get her to stop screaming is to go to her, which ends up in rocking back to sleep or in the end co-sleeping until the morning. melanie's mom, anne marie is so exhausted and has hit the "wall" that i often speak about. she didn't want to hear melanie cry, but she knew she couldn't go on living this way. she was beyond tired, not enjoying her daughter, her husband and her were in separate bedrooms so one could sleep while the other dealt with. they were both extremely overwhelmed and felt that they were never going to live a 'normal' life! overall, life was not what they expected it would be with a baby. - [catching your zzz's : melanie (1 year) sleeps!](https://tiaslightham.com/catching-your-zzzs-melanie-1-year-sleeps/) - as a child gets older it is harder for parents to grasp the courage to sleep train. by this point they are very aware of the bad habits that have been formed and they know that they need to do something in order to change their current sleep schedule. the hard part is they know there will be tears involved. infant tears are just as heartbreaking, but when an older baby/toddler is crying they are often crying out for "mommy" or "daddy." sometimes they stand up and scream for you to come to them. these acts, along with others, make it difficult for parents to stick to the process. where i am going with all of this is two-fold. one, is i completely understand how hard this can be. i have trained my own kids and it isn't easy. second, i am fully aware of the pros you will gain if you can just swallow your tears and struggle through your babies'. these pros definitely outweigh the cons. as much as you are worrying about the crying before you begin training, try and remind yourself that you are actually doing them a favour. by training them to sleep properly you are giving them a life-long tool and the opportunity to be happy during their days and learn to their maximum potential! - [time to wake up...or is it??](https://tiaslightham.com/time-to-wake-up-or-is-it/) - unfortunately, for most families the kids tend to wake up early. this early wake up call is usually okay and totally doable, except for after those nights when you decided to go out and actually act like an adult!! along with adult fun, often comes complete exhaustion and sometimes you may be feeling just a bit under the weather, if you know what i mean!! you anticipate the early morning coming way too fast and the fear of it becomes so dreadful! it's just human nature to basically do anything to get just a little more sleep! they are pure survival tactics! the truth be told we came upon our survival tactic by total accident. truth be told, we haven't actually tried it because we don't have the heart. but, sometimes desperate times call for desperate measures and maybe just maybe one day we will pull this one out of our hat! so, here is what we plan to do in our house on these special nights, if we ever get the balls to actually do it! - [a thanks to all of you!](https://tiaslightham.com/a-thanks-to-all-of-you/) - i just wanted to say a quick thank you to all my readers! i write for you and hope to in some way or another help you out in your parenthood struggles. lately, i have been receiving many comments directly on my posts, which i LOVE! i love connecting with my followers and hearing from - [to scream or not to scream?](https://tiaslightham.com/to-scream-or-not-to-scream/) - how many of you have infants that scream for anything and everything they need or want? how many of you want to simply lock yourselves in the closet with some ear plugs and a bottle of wine, when it seems as though you just can't take even one more single scream? there are ways to help your little one be less frustrated, which is the key reason the majority of babies scream. i would scream too if i couldn't communicate my wants and needs. i guess we have to give them some credit for being so smart and screaming! they've figured out it is a sure way to get our attention and in turn get them what they want! - [catching your zzz's : 6 month jake sleeps](https://tiaslightham.com/catching-your-zzzs-6-month-jake-sleeps/) - i have a preview for you about how jake's first 4 nights went with his sleep training. as you will see once your read, the beauty of this is, by night 2 there were no longer any night feeds and by night 4 trish didn't have to go in to help soothe at all! it is truly amazing how fast you can sleep train your little ones if you fully commit to the process! - [what's worse...your kids' mealtimes or pulling teeth??](https://tiaslightham.com/whats-worse-your-kids-mealtimes-or-pulling-teeth/) - while feeding your little ones do you often feel as though having your teeth pulled, maybe even novocaine free, would be better, more enjoyable, and easier than trying to get them to eat? are you prying their mouths open to force feed, much like a dentist? if you're having trouble at meal time there are some things you can do from the beginning to try a make things a bit easier on everyone. of course, every baby/child is different. different tastes, more picky than others by nature, smaller appetites, and the list goes on. therefore, my suggestions are just suggestions to try and help you avoid some of these issues if at all possible. - [talk, talk, and more talk!](https://tiaslightham.com/talk-talk-and-more-talk/) - i remember back when we first brought hudson, now 3 years old, home from the hospital. my husband looked and me and asked, "what do you think i should do with him?" he was so sincere, serious, and actually curious and what he should be doing to ensure the best outcome for hudson! my response was to talk, talk and then talk some more! i also told him to read as often as he could and to point to the words as he read. - [sleepless nights : isabella (1 year)](https://tiaslightham.com/sleepless-nights-isabella-1-year/) - sleepless nights are one of those things that everybody hates!! the only thing worse than being disturbed in the night is being disturbed night after night, after night! the type of exhaustion that your body reaches is totally indescribable. it is so hard to live day to day and function when you feel this way. the feeling is easily described as a constant hangover! the unfortunate part is there is no alcohol involved! - [catching your zzz's : 1 year isabella sleeps](https://tiaslightham.com/catching-your-zzzs-1-year-isabella-sleeps/) - the success and sleep that clients of mine find is what makes this such a rewarding service! i love to hear about the break through with their children and how they are finally learning to sleep properly! each family has a different experience, different time frame it takes to fully sleep train, and different battles along the way, but the beautiful thing is they all find sleep in the end! for erika and isabella, the road to sleep is different than that of a newborns. being 1 year and previously sleep trained as an infant, our goals were to get isabella sleeping well again. we needed to assist isabella in getting back on the sleep train that she so disruptively (in her parents' eyes) had fallen off! below is erika's update for how isabella is doing by the 3rd night. keep in mind during these 3 days we had many back and forth emails with suggestions for her to follow in order to make this process as smooth and easy as possible. - [update #1 for sam (7 months)](https://tiaslightham.com/update-1-for-sam-7-months/) - well little sam is in the beginning stages of his sleep training. i gave sara some advice and suggested she begin the sleep training focusing on naps first. if you are asking if naps and bedtime go hand in hand, the answer is yes. although starting the sleep training process and teaching the self-soothing skills seems to be easier beginning with naps. one you are less tired during the day or it is much easier to distract yourself in the day time hours than during the night when all you want to do is sleep! also you can train the naps in shorter crying intervals which is often easier for most parents. now, this isn't the case for every family or child, but it is usually the best starting point and works 9 times out of 10! - [catching your zzz's : 7 month sam sleeps](https://tiaslightham.com/catching-your-zzzs-7-month-sam-sleeps/) - JANUARY 15, 2012 sara’s Reply: "Hi! Thanks for checking in, I was sick with the stomach flu sorry for being MIA. Well we were making progress sam was in bed from 630-7 every night and he would sleep till about 330-430 then nurse then pretty much go back till 7. I also was putting him in drowsy awake he would cry and it would take us a few tries of soothing picking up but he would fall asleep on his own. He also is napping at least hour and half to 2 hours in AM and same in afternoon. thanks, sara" - [do you live with a leak-aholic?](https://tiaslightham.com/do-you-live-with-a-leak-aholic/) - seems the majority of the moms i help have a similar complaint...leaky diapers. everyone hates the dreaded leaking diaper! whether it leaks and wakes up your baby/toddler in the middle of the night or you have to continually change clothes and bedding every morning, it all just sucks!! i have a couple tricks to help decrease your leaking diaper wake-up calls! now, it isn't full-proof, but i will say with my 2 boys, i haven't had more than 20 leaky diapers total over the past 3 years over night! if you are a victim leaky diapers than read on! - [bottles are for babies, right?](https://tiaslightham.com/bottles-are-for-babies-right/) - seems as though many of the families i have been consulting with have loads of the same questions! which is why i posted previously about the leaky diaper dilemma. the fact many of the same issues confront me it can help you rest assured that you aren't the only one out there with any questions, issues, or concerns regarding your little ones. we all probably know that bottles are for babies, but somewhere along the line, life happens and we take a look around and either have toddlers with bottles or sometimes kids even older than this. this issue too, can be solved and i will post later about tactics to get rid of bottles for toddlers. when they are so attached and there seems no possible way to break them of this habit, i am telling you, there is!! today i'm helping you stop the bottle addiction before full-on withdrawals occur! i will help you and your baby say 'bye-bye' bottles and 'hello' sippy cups! the most beautiful thing about this process is it happens without tears and sadness for the comforting latex nipple??!! the trick with kids is to make habits disappear before the habit has really formed. that being said, by the time your little one is approaching their big 1st birthday you will have already been performing your magic! if your little one is around 6-10 months, than you are reading this at the perfect time! if you are beyond this point or already facing issues around getting rid of the bottle than read as well. i have loads of tricks to help you fight the bottle battle without a fight! don't hesitate to contact me on my discussion board or privately through my contact page. - [catching your zzz's : 4 month shane sleeps](https://tiaslightham.com/catching-your-zzzs-4-month-shane-sleeps/) - yes everyone shane is sleeping all night long, just 4 nights later! he went from being rocked to sleep and waking every 2 hours just to be rocked to sleep again. shane definitely had some tears, but in the long run 4 nights, each of which got progressively better, isn't all that much time. - [sleepless nights : sadie 1 year](https://tiaslightham.com/sleepless-nights-sadie-1-year/) - well here is another sleepless little one in here in toronto. i met laura and she mentioned to me that she had a 1 year old, sadie, whom was definitely sleepless! i offered to help her and through our email communications and laura's dedication and hard work, sadie is sleeping all night, every night! so to begin laura answered all the necessary questions so that i could give her proper advice for her situation. laura was very honest in her answers, as that is a key component to getting what you need out of this. i am not here to judge anything or anyone, i am only here to help. that being said, sadie was sleeping in her crib, but fighting bedtime with tantrums, etc until 11:00 pm. they also were starting bedtime routines around 8 or 9 pm and were doing bath every few nights, and doing part of the bedtime routine such as bottle and books in laura's room and then moving back to sadie's room to put her down. sadie also wanted many stuffed animals in her bed with her and sometimes laura was placing the ipad in on a soothing screen to try and calm sadie down. sadie was waking in the night and was occasionally being fed and other times laura was just soothing her back to sleep. she also wasn't napping properly and laura could tell that sadie was completely over tired. laura knew her little one wasn't acting properly due to her lack of sleep. she needed and wanted help immediately! - [are you a victim of cat naps!!](https://tiaslightham.com/are-you-a-victim-of-cat-naps/) - does your baby wake up from his/her nap after just 20 minutes or 40 minutes? do you feel that you are a victim to your baby's cat naps? you don't know what to do because they won't take a proper nap? if you are answering yes to any or all of these questions than hopefully - [your relationship post kids...or is there one??](https://tiaslightham.com/your-relationship-post-kids-or-is-there-one/) - people always tell you before you have kids that "your relationship will change, so you better enjoy each other now." or you'll get, "you guys are never going to be able to do that again!" where there is definitely truth in both of these statements and probably some truth in all the statements you may have heard, the thing to remember is it's only SOME truth. yes, your relationship does change post kids, but this is to be expected. it is no longer just you and your better half, in my case;) you now have other people you are responsible for and it's no longer just each other. although things will change it doesn't have to be for the worse. you can still do things as a couple, enjoy one another, have time alone without the kiddos and still feel rested enough to actually have fun while doing them! - [been MIA, but here's why!!](https://tiaslightham.com/been-mia-but-heres-why/) - sorry i haven't had a post in a few days, i've been super busy helping many moms sleep train their little ones! it's very exciting to see the major transformations in their sleep. therefore in this post you will find how i am going to document the stories so you can follow along and learn as we go! - [sleepless nights : shane 4 months](https://tiaslightham.com/sleepless-nights-shane-4-months/) - it's just one of those things when you begin to sleep train your little ones that support from others always helps. melissa contaced me through my "request a sleep consult" link on my blog. we were in touch via email and then set up a phone consultation. we spent an hour discussing their current nap and bedtime routines and what she felt were shane's sleep issues. melissa informed me that currently shane needed to be rocked and laid down asleep. he was waking around every two hours, but she was only feeding him one of those wakings. unfortunately, when he woke he was looking for either her or her husband, paul, to come to him in the night and rock him back to sleep. shane doens't know how to fall alseep unassisted at this point, so this is where i come in! melissa was also concerned because he was still being swaddled and needed a soother. as for shane's nap schedule. he again was being rocked to sleep, swaddled, and soother, but would only sleep a maximum of 45 minutes per nap. if at the 45 minute mark she went to him and rocked him back to sleep, sometimes he would sleep more. melissa also mentioned that if she brought him downstairs to the couch with her, he would take a really long nap being held! who wouldn't right? it's awesome to snuggle and sleep, but it's time we get little shane to go to sleep unassisted, unswaddled, and soother free! - [well behaved kids isn't luck...it's parenting](https://tiaslightham.com/well-behaved-kids-isnt-luck-its-parenting/) - i go to bed each night thinking how truly amazing my kids are, how incredible our day was together, and how much fun it is to be with them. like i said in the past, sure we have our moments, but in all honestly they are few and far between. my mom used to tell me when hudson was younger that he was going to flip a switch and not always be so good, but so far he has proven her wrong. it's also like i mentioned before in regards to my teaching days and being told that i was always getting the good class. NONE of this is true. my students and now my kids are well behaved because i take tons and tons of time to teach them my expectations. people are always shocked that hudson, at 2 years old, asks without prompt if he can please be excused from the table. you, too can have this, but not without hard work. it takes lots of love, time, and commitment to raise happy and respectful kids. i don't think you can give them anything better than these characteristics and values. - [oh, the joys of travel!!](https://tiaslightham.com/oh-the-joys-of-travel/) - do you travel with your little ones? do you have trouble with adjusting them to different time zones? settling in at night in a new place? deal with night wakings when you are in a new environment? if you answered yes to any or all of the above questions than this blog is for you!! i travel lots with my kids because i am from the united states and we live in canada. that being said we go as a family two times a year. i wish i could say it was a short jaunt just from vancouver to portland, but unfortunately my husband happened to be from toronto. therefore it is a long haul from east to west coast, which makes for not only a long, long day of travel, but also the issue of time change. travel as adults without kids can make for a long day and tiresome, but at the same time a joy to just sit back relax, read trash magazines, sip a latte, watch a movie, maybe even sleep! all things you don't get to do much of with little ones onboard with you! rather you don't read at all, you chug or spill most of your latte, don't watch the tv and you may get the opportunity to drift off for a short cat nap if your infants/toddlers happen to sleep! two totally opposite scenarios, but i guess we all knew this before we had kids! - [toddler terrors happen to everyone...it's how you deal with them that matters!](https://tiaslightham.com/toddler-terrors-happen-to-everyone-its-how-you-deal-with-them-that-matters/) - today was one of those mornings where i wanted to lock my toddler in his room and leave him there. in fact he was probably safer in there, than out here with me!! argh!! sometimes they know exactly how to push you to the very edge and when they get you there they somehow know it. they then back off and you of course have a sense of guilt from having to discipline them. - [tips for in the hospital and when you first go home](https://tiaslightham.com/tips-for-in-the-hospital-and-when-you-first-go-home/) - there are some things that i have done with my first and modified even more with my second that have seemed to really work for me. i find that by doing the things i'm going to chat about, it made life much easier living with a newborn and helped to create some good habits from the get go. having a newborn, especially if it's your first time, isn't always what you expect it to be. everyone always said to me that they can't prepare you for how a baby/child will change your life....well, isn't that the truth! you seriously don't know until you are in the situation. that being said kids do change your life for the better! they are little miracles and i never could have imagined how truly obsessed i would have been with my kids! - [follow your gut!!](https://tiaslightham.com/follow-your-gut/) - i can't emphasize this enough.....always, always, always follow your gut! like i said before, you know your kids better than anyone else and if something feels off, go with your gut. whether you feel like they aren't feeling well, a situation doesn't seem right, etc. go with your gut!! this topic is on the forefront - [early bedtime = happy babies and kids](https://tiaslightham.com/early-bedtime-happy-babies-and-kids/) - people often think i am completely nuts when i tell them what time my kids go to bed. hudson, my almost 3 year old, will occasionally nap and if so he goes to bed a bit later, but still fairly early in the eyes of most. for example last night, both kids were in a bed and asleep in a matter of minutes by 5:45pm!! this is a little bit of heaven for me since my husband works late. this gives me some time to myself!! something we don't often get when you are spending your time raising little ones. on a day when hudson has a nap he will be in bed and lights out by 6:30 and asleep no later than 7pm. - [good morning bloody diaper rash and nasty cough...](https://tiaslightham.com/good-morning-bloody-diaper-rash-and-nasty-cough/) - well it was just one of those days....woke up to hudson's nasty cough which, of course, kept him from napping properly. which in turn made my day very long. on top of the cough, baby beckett woke up with a bloody diaper rash! i don't mean red and rashy, i mean sores and blood! it was the saddest thing i have ever seen and it made me sick to my stomach to see my sweet little man in this condition. but, he of course, like always was smiling and giggling. he is truly the happiest baby and not by pure fluke, but because he is WELL RESTED!! mommy secret of the day; help your baby learn how to sleep and in return it will help you have a very happy baby, who will only fuss when something is truly wrong! although, i am expecting beckett to fuss it up here in the next few days, as a few of his teeth are about to come through and im sure his bum has to be bugging him. - [mommy secret revealed: are you still feeding in the night and want to stop??](https://tiaslightham.com/mommy-secret-revealed-are-you-still-feeding-in-the-night-and-want-to-stop/) - the most amazing feeling is when you wake up in the morning and realize you haven't been up in the night to feed! you wonder....is he/she okay? is this a complete fluke? will this beautiful thing never happen again? there is often a certain level of anxiety that mom's have when they go to bed, because they are already wondering when they are going to be woken up to feed. i hate this and therefore i try and get rid of the night feedings as soon as possible! some mom's say they don't mind getting up in the night....i don't buy this, not for a second!! - [case study: less than 24 hours of sleep training & 4 month jacob sleeps all night](https://tiaslightham.com/case-study-less-than-24-hours-of-sleep-training-4-month-jacob-sleeps-all-night/) - sorry i haven't made a post in a few days i have been busy with my own little monsters and helping jenny, a 30-something mom from oregon sleep train her 4 month boy, jacob. jacob is her second baby and she has admitted to making the same mistakes with him as she did with her first. we connected through facebook and spoke via email and 1 phone conversation last week. at the time jacob was sick and i advised her to wait until he was better, as i ALWAYS go to a baby when they aren't feeling well. i may be harsh and firm, but i'm not just plain old mean! during our 20 minute phone conversation she explained to be that jacob was taking 20 minute cat naps throughout the day, was being put down asleep after nursing for each and every sleep, and during the night was waking on average every 2 hours. she waited until he was feeling better, which was yesterday and decided that she had hit her breaking point and the sleep training had to be done. the night before jacob was up 5 times between midnight and 5am. this i have to say is a sure sign that jacob needs help. he needs his sleep and jenny needs hers. sleep training him will be a win-win situation. so lets begin.... - [vino anyone??!!](https://tiaslightham.com/vino-anyone/) - the biggest and most important mommy secret of all......you absolutely cannot survive without red wine!! it's saturday night, the boys are in bed, beckett asleep and hudson my 2 1/2 year old, chatting away upstairs, and my husband cooking dinner tonight!! a little bit of heaven! - [brawling it out with a 2 year old!!!](https://tiaslightham.com/brawling-it-out-with-a-2-year-old/) - well, they may be smaller than you, but lets face it they are so much smarter than you! now the thing is we can't let them think for a second that we know that. we have to make it clear that we are the big men on campus and what we say goes. usually easier said than done. this was the case for us tonight....bath time! always such an enjoyable time for us except for on the nights when my 2 1/2 year old, hudson, has had nursery school, lunch program, followed by french. a long day, with no nap, equals disaster most the time! he begged me to do french and not only did he get it, but i got a boy who now doesn't need a nap most days, yikes!! the whole day, no breaks, not something i was quite prepared for. anyhow, back to the story. i always say one of the biggest, most important mommy secrets of all time is STICK TO YOUR GROUND!!! be firm, don't yell. yelling means you've already lost the battle. be sure you are being fair and stick to what you say. don't go back. once you do, on anything, even something as small as giving them the one candy you said no to, to begin with, than you've lost control. they are in charge and getting back in charge is not the easiest thing to accomplish! - [How I got here...](https://tiaslightham.com/how-i-got-here/) - it's hard to even know where to begin but i guess i'll just start at the beginning. i had hudson january 24, 2009 and he was my first. needless to say i was going into this blindly besides reading a book on sleep training, what to expect when you're expecting and taking my pre-natal course at the hospital. all of these things help in some way or another i'm sure but, lets face it...bringing home the baby is an entirely different entity. - [is your baby sleeping through the night??](https://tiaslightham.com/is-your-baby-sleeping-through-the-night/) - this, i have to say, is the million dollar question between moms! this is the ultimate achievement....the jackpot! if your baby is sleeping through the night i'd love to hear your secrets as well. my two boys sleep very well but i did it differently for both, since the first was sort of a learning curve....i now have my own mommy secrets to help you get your babies to sleep through the night and nap that have worked for me and others! - [night 2 of sleep training for 10 week hudson](https://tiaslightham.com/night-2-of-sleep-training-for-10-week-hudson/) - hi again! it's been a busy past few days sorry it's taken me so long to get back to my story! i'm sure you all know how it is with kiddos....it's monday and before you know it the weekend has come and gone and it's monday again! - [no bad kids, just bad parenting](https://tiaslightham.com/no-bad-kids-just-bad-parenting/) - sound like a harsh title, but sometimes the truth isn't sugar coated! something came up in conversation the other day that made me think about an important post....tempermant of your babies. tempermant and the way your babies and children act, in my opinion, have to do with the type of environment and home they are raised in. children are a product of their environment, whether it's at home or their classroom at school. i was a kindergarten teacher in the states and every year was told by other teachers that i always got the so called "good kids." this always used to upset me because when they came to me on day one they did not act the way i helped mold them to. they all had to learn to listen, follow rules, learn their boundaries, etc. the emphasis placed on class management and establishing the classroom environment that i felt was conducive for learning took a lot of time, patience and hard work. i mean a lot of hard work. i won't go into how i did this or the methods of my approach right now, because i want to chat about helping create an environment in your home that molds a baby/child with a good tempermant. - [is your perfect sleeper not sleeping so perfectly??](https://tiaslightham.com/is-your-perfect-sleeper-not-sleeping-so-perfectly/) - often our perfect sleepers will not sleep so perfectly! the sudden change in sleep habits seem baffling, but there are lots of legitimate reasons to why this happens. click the link to see the full article or just preview it below to learn about some reasons why this may happen to you! http://www.parents.com/baby/sleep/issues/teach-baby-to-sleep-through-the-night/ The - [running around like a chicken with your head cut off?](https://tiaslightham.com/running-around-like-a-chicken-with-your-head-cut-off/) - this expression holds very true for many families in today's society. i have a 3 year old and a 10 month old, but i find myself feeling the outside pressures to "over-schedule" my child. in this link, dr. susan newman, writes about why it is so important to take a step back and remember what's truly important, family. she mention how family should come first before all the extracurricular activities. she doesn't say to stop all activities, but she says to leave time for family! - [tough love](https://tiaslightham.com/tough-love/) - there is a very fine line between nice and too nice. between tough and too tough. between firm and too firm. these fine lines are lines you, as parents, have to distinguish and stick to through trial and error. ultimately you have to parent how you feel is right. discipline in ways you feel are logical and fair. in ways that work for you and your family. no one, me included, can tell you how to parent. nor, should anyone tell you how to parent. this is your job! they are your kids, your responsibility and it is all up to you how you decide to take this journey. - [Guest Blogger : Katie Moore](https://tiaslightham.com/guest-blogger-katie-moore/) - katie moore recently contacted me to chat about something we both have in common and feel strongly about...exercise and pregnancy go hand in hand! we both feel extremely strong in our belief that healthy pregnancies involve physical activity to your mind and body! stress is something that everyone has. it is a part of life, but how we deal with the our stress is the important factor. too much stress can be harmful to you and your unborn baby. please read the article below by guest author, katie moore. i hope you enjoy her abundant information and find it helpful and useful to you and/or someone you may know! - [sleepless nights : ryan (5 months)](https://tiaslightham.com/sleepless-nights-ryan-5-months/) - it's been quite some time since i've blogged about a clients' sleep training journey. i thought it was well overdue and one of my past clients had a situation that i'm felt many of you sleepless moms may be able to relate to. i hope by sharing diana's story you will find comfort in knowing you aren't alone and that you too, will find sleep. whether through information via this blog post or by taking the next of contacting mommy secrets directly today to request your own sleep consult - [catching your zzz's : ryan (5 months) sleeps](https://tiaslightham.com/catching-your-zzzs-ryan-5-months-sleeps/) - well, i'm back to give you the final synopses of diana and ryan's sleep training. for all my followers, readers, and anyone else who happens to stop by i think you will be thrilled to know that once again mommy secrets' sleep training has been a success. i'm happy to say that ryan is no longer feeding in the night, naps 2 solid naps each day in his crib, without motion. no more car naps, buggy naps and no more 3rd cat nap in the evening. i love when my clients see results and have a sleeping baby! - [are you truly connected with your kids?](https://tiaslightham.com/are-you-truly-connected-with-your-kids/) - this seems an easy question to answer if you simply jump the gun. the answer becomes much more difficult and complex if you seriously take the time to think about what this loaded question really implies. just like teaching, when it comes to parenting you can't simply go through the motions day in and day out. well, let me rephrase that...yes you can go day to day, half assing your job and doing the bare minimum to get through each day and teachers and parents all around the world do this. the sad part is the results of this type of teaching/parenting are shown directly in their students and/or kids. as a past teacher, and now a parent, i get it. we all have our days where you know you've done your best if your kids are fed, kept safe, and put to bed. we are all human and have bad days. days we can't perform our jobs at our peak performance. occasionally we all feel like this. the problem doesn't arise for those teachers or parents whom have a bad day here and there. the problem occurs for those who live their life in this manner each and every day. they parent just to make it through the day. they aren't emotionally invested in their kids. what many may not know is the direct results of your parenting are reflected in your children today and for the rest of their lives. you may notice that your child misbehaves more than the next. that your child seems angry or filled with anxiety. or maybe you haven't taken a step back to even reflect on the behaviour of your child. if you are finding this article to ring true for you or others around you that you know, than maybe now is the time to take the time to really think about and reflect on this question. what does creating a secure-attached relationship really mean?? are you truly connected with your kids?? - [pregnancy and exercise are like ketchup and mustard](https://tiaslightham.com/pregnancy-and-exercise-are-like-ketchup-and-mustard/) - pregnancy and exercise are like ketchup and mustard...you just can't have one without the other! i truly believe from the research i have read and from my own personal experience that exercise and pregnancy go hand in hand. they are the yin and the yang. you can't have one without the other, or rather you can, but shouldn't have one without the other. of course the variation in exercises will most definitely vary from one women to the next, but the fact is that each and every pregnant lady should do some form of exercise. not only for themselves; to make you feel better, maintain your strength during pregnancy and labour, increase your recovery time, along with many more positives. but, you should also exercise to help the health of your unborn child. research shows that exercise during your pregnancy can benefit your baby both in heart and overall health. in a previous blog post titled, "exercise your mind, body and soul for a healthy you and baby" i talk about many of the health benefits that exercising during pregancy will give you and your baby! check it out and i'm sure you will agree (whether you want to exercise or not) that you should get up off your tushy and start walking today! - [exercise your mind, body and soul for a healthy you and baby!](https://tiaslightham.com/exercise-your-mind-body-and-soul-for-a-healthy-you-and-baby/) - exercise is a huge part of my life and has been for many years. without it, i definitely wouldn't be a 'sane' mommy! exercise gets me through my day, feeling as though i have done something for myself. in order for me to be the best mom, wife, friend, sister and any other hat i may wear...i have to exercise. without exercise it's safe to say i might just be plain old mean! it gives me a chance to clear my head, get my endorphins going, helps me to look and feel my best, which is not only good for me, but also my marriage! if you know what i mean..wink, wink!!! - [quality versus quantity](https://tiaslightham.com/quality-versus-quantity/) - quality versus quantity is something that all of us debate within many areas of our lives. is it better to spend lots of time at work or less time in a more productive manner? is it better to spend lots of time exercising at a moderate level or kill it for 30 minutes? is it better to spend lots of time with our kids where we may be reading the paper and them watching TV or less time where we are fully engaged with them? all of these questions, along with many more, each have an answer. everyone's answer to them may vary, but for me the quality is way more important than the quantity in each and every area!! - [awake with the stars](https://tiaslightham.com/awake-with-the-stars/) - are you awake with the stars? if you are i feel your pain! it is dreadful..nothing worse! when your toddler wakes too early and expects you to get up with them, it literally feels like the end of the world. it's still dark and they are jumping up and down in their crib, singing loudly, feeling as though you should be up if they are up. unfortunately they don't understand why it isn't time to get up. - [Mommy Secrets is your key to lights out all night!](https://tiaslightham.com/mommy-secrets-is-your-key-to-lights-out-all-night/) - hi everyone! happy new year! i hope 2013 was good for you and that 2014 is even better! i know i have some areas i want to improve this year and one is Mommy Secrets. i've had a busy year with life and family and i haven't been focusing as much on Mommy Secrets and - [Mommy Secrets’ Quick and Dirties to Parenting](https://tiaslightham.com/mommy-secrets-quick-and-dirties-to-parenting/) - To all you mommies out there I’m sure this list will resonate with you in some way.
